Joan Cornellà Vázquez, born in Barcelona in 1981, is a cartoonist and illustrator famous for his unsettling, surreal humor and black humorous comic strips as well as the artwork. Cornellà's work has often been described as disturbing or flat-out offensive. Through simplistic visual language, he can use satire to comment on the sinister and often bleak side of human nature through a myriad of unconventional scenarios. Cornellà's work is thought-provoking. Although it is full of absurdities and improprieties, some people are offended by his work, but many people also resonate because of it and feel sad while smiling. In the artist’s own words: "I think we are all laughing at suffering. We must start with the idea that when we laugh, we are laughing at someone or something. With or without empathy, there will always be some degree of Cruel. Despite this, I know that if one of my comics happens in real life, I won't laugh at all."
