Tainan Station is a first-class station on the Taiwan Railways Corporation's Longitudinal Line and the westernmost station on the route. Currently, a project is underway to make Tainan's urban railway underground, and the old station will be preserved as a cultural asset, modeled after the Kaohsiung model. Tainan Station is one of the few stations in Taiwan built within the old Qing Dynasty city. When the railway opened in 1900 during the Japanese colonial period, it entered the city through Dabei Gate, with a station located northeast of the downtown area. It then exited the city through Xiaonan Gate. Following urban redevelopment, the station converged at Beimen Town 2-chome (now Beimen Road Section 2, Fubei Street), Meiji Town 1-chome (now Chenggong Road), Dazheng Town 3-chome (now Zhongshan Road), and Shou Town 1-chome (now Beimen Road Section 1), forming the streetscape in front of the station today. The station became a key transportation hub in Tainan. After World War II, the station became the heart of Tainan's city center, with numerous shopping malls, department stores, and hotels nearby.
